Timely Tuesday: Mother's Day is Coming!

If you've been following the blog, you know the drill. First of all, we have to have alliterative names for posts. And, usually Tuesday is a Tasty Tuesday, a recipe! This might not be something you can eat, but it is a recipe for success!

(Hint! There is a coupon code at the bottom of the post! Don't miss it!)

I must admit, I have been COMPLETELY engrossed in my day job. You see, I'm on a rather large project. It doesn't really matter what I do for a living, but what does matter is that I just remembered that Mother's Day is coming up! This Mother's Day is especially special because it is coincides with World Fair Trade Day in 2013.

So, in honor of fair trade, we are re-releasing our new batik card line. These cards are made by Ibu Maria - our newest artisan in our newest partner country of Indonesia. They are made from fabric - not screen prints (as we are often asked). The price is $10 for a set of 5 blank cards.

Click here to read about our new partnership with Ibu Maria!

I have to mention that I generally only purchase blank cards. I agree a comedian who once asked why we purchase cards with sayings already in them. I generally prefer to write from the heart - in fine point Sharpie marker.

We didn't really know what fair trade was when we started Scarlet Threads and we still have a lot to learn. But, we believe in the principles: a fair wage, dignified and safe employment, and empowerment. What's not to like? We add to those principles a passion for adoption and bringing children home to their forever families, which is certainly the most important passion that we have. It truly pervades every aspect of our business.

We want to empower women around the world. To bring the products of artisans to market! In this small way, we are hoping that the wages that we help those artisans to earn hold families together.

So this Mother's Day, I hope that you help us to celebrate World Fair Trade Day, too! If you choose to purchase from us in the coming weeks, we invite you to use "MothersDayFT" to save 10% in our shop. The code will expire on May 13th.

Monday Mission: Reach Alaska

We are on a mission, a mission to reach all 50 states in 2013. Last year we reached 36 states, which was quite a feat! We even reached Hawaii - twice.

In order to help us reach our goal, we are going to offer 25% off to the first order from each unreached state. Starting with Alaska. Use "MidnightSun" at checkout and we will put your fair trade product in the mail promptly!

Thrifty Thursday: 2-for-$30 Fun-ctionality

With the new products on the way (have you seen our recent fabric market exploits on the blog and facebook?), we need to make room in Carrie's closet... er Scarlet Threads Warehouse.

This Thrifty Thursday is a treat because we're offering a sale on one of our most beloved styles Vivian paired with our functional and fabulous Kenzie. Both are fabulous offerings for Mother's Day, Spring Birthdays, or those garden brunches we all believed we'd grow up to host.

We're offering both as a 2-for-$30 steal. Enjoy!

Tasty Tuesday: Oreo Truffle Stuffed Cupcakes!

Yes friends, you read that right! Oreo truffle stuffed cupcakes! My sister sent me this recipe, and while I have not tried them myself yet, she assures me that they're wonderful! She also took them to work with her, and I'm positive that they were well received by her coworkers also. Everyone loves baked goods at work, right?
Oreo Truffle Stuffed Cupcakes:

- 1 package Oreo cookies, crushed
- 1 package cream cheese

-combine cookie crumbles with cream cheese with a spoon,
but you'll need to mix and squish with your hands!
- roll into roughly one-inch balls
- place on cookie sheet and pop into freezer for 30ish minutes

- prepare yellow cake mix, as directed on the box
- take frozen truffles out of freezer and place one ball per cupcake slot in cupcake tin
- fill about 3/4 the way full of batter
- bake cupcakes as directed on box (normally 375* for 20-25 minutes)

- crush up one sleeve of Oreos
- combine two sticks of softened butter and about 7 cups of powdered sugar in deep bowl (gradually add sugar)
- add 1tsp vanilla extract, if desired
--- mix with electric mixer to desired consistency- be aware sugar may fly out if bowl is too shallow :)
- add crushed up Oreo's and mix with electric mixer until cookies are thoroughly mixed with frosting

- once cupcakes are out of the oven and cooled, frost with oreo frosting!

Recipe makes 24 cupcakes (and I had extra truffles and a bit of frosting left- yum!!)
Hmmmm, pretty sure I need to try making these soon!
Thanks so much for sharing this with us, Bethany!
Please let us know if you try this recipe (or any other that we've shared!). Anything baking in your kitchen this week?

Sunday Snapshot: We Found the Market!

A bit over a week ago, Shelby, Martha and of course Deng Jie and I headed out on a little adventure.

We were off in search of the fabric market. Since Chinese New Year, the market had somehow disappeared, and no one had been able to tell us where to find it. That was posing a problem for our depleted apron store in the US. We needed new product! We needed new styles! But for all of this... we need fabric.

With a leftover receipt from a past trip to the market, Deng was able to track down one of our favorite fabric sellers, and he gave us some tips on where to find the market's new location. Thursday morning, bright and early, we headed out in the city and were blessed with success. Hooray!

You guys have been telling us that we need to put together some aprons for the men in your families... well, we listened. How about this fabric for your little boys?

Ya'll love the flirty half apron, right? Well... how do you think this color combo looks?

Any guesses on what style of apron we're using this fun fabric with?

Deng Jie just made up the first batch of samples, and they are adorable. Seriously... you guys are going to love these next aprons.

Phew! So glad that we found the market. Now for patience to share the aprons with you as Deng sews like a madwoman...
